You would be called upon to help in local community situations or a crisis that affects an individual or a family of your church.The Kidsreach "Trauma Counselling Course" has been developed for these situations. A BIG thank-you to Darrell Higginbottom as he steps down from his role in Kidsvision to make a move to rural WA. Darrell is taking up the role of Chaplain in Harvey and will formally conclude his role as Family Pastor at Rivervale Church of Christ at the end of December. He has been a part of the Kids Vision team taking a more leading role in 2010 in organizing all the network gatherings for 2010 and has a real heart for serving with children and we will miss him as he makes this move but are delighted for him and his family as they seek to establish themselves under God’s hand in a new place. Please join us in praying for him as he makes this move and that he will live out God’s vision for the work to be accomplished in Harvey.

Developing Vision for your Children's Ministry

I am currently reading a book by Wayne Codeiro, 'Doing Church As A Team'. It has been encouraging to read as it describes a philosophy of developing team. As Children's Ministers we have a role to integrate the vision of our churches into our ministry.
If you have ever been wondering how vision is developed and how you may be a part of developing your ministry within the wider church vision then I hope this little excerpt encourages you as it has encourage me.

At the beginning stages (of developing vision) you may have the tendency to feel inadequate for the tasks ahead. You may feel ill equipped to measure up to any new vision, let alone a God glorifying dream! But rest assured, God will always start with what you have, not what you don’t have. We can learn a lot about developing or casting vision by examining how God communicated vision to His people through His servant Moses.
Moses had the incredible assignment of guiding Gods people out of Egypt, through the wilderness and into the promised land. Got vision! Moses sure did! The survival of God’s people depended on nothing less than his ability to discern and then communicate this vision.
This is such a powerful legacy, one that set into motion vision and direction for every future generation of God’s children. Among the lessons we can glean from the practical instruction the Lord gave Moses in communicating His vision is to begin with what you have. Numbers 10:1,2 The Lord spoke to Moses saying, "Make yourself two trumpets of silver, of hammered work you shall make them; and you shall use them for summonsing the congregation and for having the camps set out"
God said to make trumpets of silver but where would these recently freed slaves get their hands on precious metals?There were no jewelry stores in the neighborhood, at least not at the time. Fortunately God had commanded the Israelites to plunder the wealth of the Egyptians. All that was required was found within their grasp. The trumpets were made out of what they had, not from what they didn't possess.

As you begin to develop your vision, look at what you have. Look at the skills, talents, the spiritual gifts and passions God has planted in you …and your team (emphasis mine)

Like a jigsaw

Each of us is like a piece of a jigsaw puzzle. Every piece has its place in God's plan. No one piece is optional. How frustrating it would be to put together a 3000 piece puzzle only to find one of the pieces missing at the end! That's how God sees us. Every piece is incredibly important. Everyone is necessary to complete the divine puzzle. When all the pieces fir together, the world can see a beautiful, complicated picture of the heart of Jesus for people everywhere.

Pages Cafe at Koorong was a hub of discussion as we had our Kids Vision Network gathering for the term. Thanks for all who came along for the morning as we covered some ground in looking at available resources, including a new magazine out of the U.S. called "K Mag'. Our morning gave the opportunity to browse and compare what some of us have used in our ministry's and are able to recommend as well as look at some new ones, with us dispersing throughout the store at the end of the morning after a good coffee.

Please be praying for one another as we work on the frontline in this vital area of children, in particular please be praying for Darrell (Rivervale), as he is currently facing some health challenges.

Recently the ABC showed a documentary titled 'Consuming Kids, the Commercialisation of Childhood'. This show was well worth viewing for anyone that has children or works with children as it gives an insight into how aggressively children are marketed and how young children are targeted to be brand aware. It gives an insight into how children are viewed and how the marketing is researched and even how the parents factor into the equation.
Shows such as these are another resource we have available to us to understand the world in which we live and the pace in which it is changing along with the place children have in the society in which we work.

Recent Network Meeting

June 17 was the first network gathering of Kids Vision for this year. The get together was held at Zamia Café in Kings Park, which is such a great spot for those working in children’s ministry as we sat on the doorstep of a great children’s play area.
The time spent was refreshing as we reflected on where everyone is in their ministry context and shared story and resource together. It was also beneficial as we were able to affirm anew the desire for a Kid’s Vision Network and the potential it has to assist us on the frontline of working with children in a ministry context.
By definition networking is, ‘a supportive system of sharing information and services among individuals and groups having a common interest.’ Kids’ Vision is our vehicle in Churches of Christ to bring those of us with a common interest in children together. It is our hope to build on that for the remainder of this year as we all collectively serve Christ together.

Applications for 2009 Kids Vision Scholarships are now open! Kids Vision Scholarships provide for ANY volunteer or children’s ministry worker/leader to study 2 children’s ministry units over a 2 year period. Any study can be undertaken at audit, diploma/cert IV, degree and post graduate level … we just want you to have the opportunity to be equipped in order to help children find and follow Jesus! Kids Vision WA is very pleased to announce the appointment of Sue Vawser as our Kids Vision WA Co-ordinator.

Sue has been appointed to co-ordinate quarterly network gatherings, the Kids Vision Scholarship Programme and Childsafe. Sue will also be in regular contact with those of us who lead children's ministries through our churches.

Sue is a member of South Perth Church of Christ, married to Clint and has two children, Tyler and Hannah. Sue's desire is to serve, bless and support all of us. Sue has a warm and engaging personality and we know that you will enjoy getting to know her and you will be blessed through her ministry of encouragement.

Sue will be based at South Perth Church of Christ office. Her hours are 9 - 12 Thursday mornings during term time.

Intergenerational Worship

"The Church of All Ages:Generations Worshipping Together" by Howard Vanderwell (Ed).

At our network gathering last Thursday (which was terrific!) a few of us had a discussion about the challenges and merits of intergenerational worship.

This discussion prompted me to read this book which is a recent release from the Alban Institute. The book is not available in Australian Christian bookstores, but can be accessed from the Vose Library (when I return it later this week) or you can purchase online.

The book summarises the challenges facing churches who desire to pursue intergenerational worship. Written by a group of contributors, the book offers a number of differnent perspectives and insights.

It's important to be aware that the Contributors write from a "Reformed" theological background. When it comes to discussing the practical implications for effective intergenerational worship, there is a strong underlying assumption that parents need to be vitally involved in helping children and teens to engage in worship gatherings. And herein lies the major weakness of the book: it's not written from a missional viewpoint. Most of us who warm to the ideal of multigenerational worship are grappling with issues of parents who come with no church experience. We grapple with increasingly fragmented and hurting parents and children for whom, the challenge to sit for an hour or so in a worship service (however we seek to make it enaging) is just plain difficult.

In the introduction, Howard Vanderwell points out that this is a contemporary issue that the church needs to continue to grapple with. I agree that this is a very important conversation that we need to keep talking about as we meet, as we grapple with Scripture and as we seek to live and worship in community both with believers and non-believers alike.

There is so much material available for kid’s church leaders to choose from when it comes to programming and sometimes it takes an “emergency” situation to get us to experiment with new products.

We do not use this site as a venue for pushing products but for those of you who like me can get stuck on “one-way” of doing Kids church and you feel you would like a change. ( I think it’s a guy thing) Here is one I am currently using for the first time and I highly recommend it.

I was unable to get my usual material on time from my provider for the first week in January so I called on KidsReach and its been great. This comes in 4 week plans and is inexpensive at $35 for all you need – PowerPoint’s, photocopiable worksheets, stories, object lessons and craft ideas

Ruth Powell, director of National Church Life Survey, has written an insightful article about the increasing gap between the age of people in the Australian population and the age of people in churches. A brief summary. . ..

In 1966 there was no discernable difference in the church-going habits of different age groups in the Australian population.

Since then, younger people have been less and less likely to attend church. In the chart above, the darker line shows the shift from the 2001 NCLS data. The curve representing the Australian population is on the left.

Basically, the church in Australia is growing older. Young people are less likely to be involved in Church life. And this is not a trend that is reversing but increasing.

While some denominations (notably the Pentecostals and "Other Protestant" - smaller groups and independent churches) are bucking the trend, this is a worrying sign for the future of church life in Australia and one that every church board and ministry team needs to consider.

Many of you may have been alerted to the 'dangers' of this movie via email. The movie release date is December 7th so there are no actual movie reviews circulating on the web yet.

I read through all 3 books in the series last week. There are indeed elements to be very concerned about for those working in kids and youth ministries. Whilst many children may not pick up on the anti-church elements, they are likely to be intrigued by the daemons that are an integral part of every person's character. Daemons are animals that reflect the human soul. In young children they can change shape at will, often according to how the child is feeling or what they are facing.

There is no clear distinction in the books as to right/wrong; good/evil. Alliances between witches, angels, animals and people groups (mythical & human) shift and change through multiple worlds. The overall plot of the stories move from the 'kingdom of heaven' to the 'republic of heaven' - in other words, the overthrow of "God".

I personally love fantasy books and this series is indeed a rivetting read. But it is disturbing and has the real potential to pull children away from the truth of the Gospel.

Karl Bastian at Kidology has developed a terrific online training resource. Check it out at the Kidology website. Kids Vision highly recommends a membership to this site. There are heaps of terrific free resources and ideas for ministry. For a small annual cost, you can access even more resources and receive discounts on things like the online training package.

Kidology online training is useful for those in kids ministry leadership as either a personal development resource or as something to share with the team. The training package includes a downloadable PDF outline, powerpoint outline and movie files. Register with a professional membership and the first training pack can be yours for about US$10.

Kerry Cross is our Country Link Team Leader for the South-West region. Kerry is going to give us a pic of herself soon - but in the meantime, we'd love you to get to know Kerry! If you are involved in kids ministry in the south-west, Kerry is a great person to contact for a chat or for kids ministry info.

For the past 5 years, Kerry has lived in Busselton with her husband, Graeme and children, Natasha(12), Ben (10) and Anna (7). Paraburdoo, Geraldton, Carnamah, Kulin and Lake Grace have all been called home in the past 22 years.

Apart from managing the day to day functions of an active family, Kerry heads up KIDZONE, the children’s ministry of Cornerstone Church of Christ and teaches at Cornerstone Christian College. Kerry loves taking ballet lessons and aerobics classes. She is an avid reader, being part of a book club and also loves running the ‘Desperate Staff Wives’ prayer group. Her ‘Life Group’ helps keep her connected with her church family as Sunday mornings are usually spent out with the children.

Kerry’s greatest desires are to see her own children and those in the church family grow in Christ-likeness : to be on their guard; stand firm in the faith; be people of courage; be strong and do everything in love. (1 Cor 16:13) She sees reading the scriptures and prayer, particularly praise, confession, repentance and forgiveness as great weapons given by the Lord for the spiritual battle.

Be on the lookout for a Kids Vision pack which is being given to all COCWA Churches at the AGM on Friday 26th October. the Kids Vision pack contains prospectus details for our 2008 scholarship programme. The scholarship programme is aimed at providing financial assistance to those who wish to undertake study at diploma/degree level for 2 units of children's ministry specific training. Information about the Bible colleges offering relevant courses will also be included in the pack.

The pack also contains a DVD which has some useful resources for your church and team. Amongst the material on the DVD is a brief interview with some of our fantastic kids ministers talking about the highlights of their ministries in 2007.

Kids Vision will launch a new training initiative in October at our COCWA AGM. We will be offering to ANY person involved in ANY kids ministry activity associated with Churches of Christ to apply for scholarship funding to study kids ministry in 2008. We have 6 scholarships to award.

Kids Vision has recently met with colleges offering units of study and we recommend that you take a look at:

Harvest West.

Information regarding the scholarship funding programme will be given to churches at the AGM - or sent out in the post for those churches not able to send a representative. We had another great network time together on Thursday 29th August at the Baldivis Church. Thanks Danny for hosting us and for Julie for the great lunch and cookies!

One of the outcomes of our dicussions was that we are going to review the timing of network get-togethers. We recognise that few of us are availble to meet during the day and so we would love to hear from you if a night meeting would make it easier for you to attend. Network gatherings are for anyone involved in leading and serving in a kids related ministry area in a church, school or outreach setting. They provide a terrific opportunity to be encouraged and resourced in ministry. Email Tania if you agree that a night meeting once per term would suit you better.

Andrew Shepherd has written a book called "Honey I Shrunk the Kids Ministry!". Andrew is Children's Pastor at Crossways Baptist in Melbourne. Take a look at Crossways Kids @ http://www.crossway.org.au/. The book doesn't seem to be available as yet - so keep your eyes open.

Childsafe

Over 30 of our churches have begun the process of adopting Childsafe. Childsafe is a tool which enables churches to promote, develop and maintain best practice principles for working with children and young people in all aspects of ministry.

Implementation of Childsafe is underway in some of our churches (Kalgoorie, Baldivis, South Perth ...) COCWA is presently working on a simple implementation plan + a basic training package. Facilitators for the basic team training presentation are Scott Vawser (Youth Vision) and Tania Watson (Kids Vision). Contact either of these two people or Nigel Pegram at COCWA if you would like further information. Please note that the training package covers BOTH youth and children's ministry ... so its easy to get all of your teams together for the one training session!

Information regarding Childsafe Online has been emailed to churches this past week. User details will be sent out in the near future once ChildSafe has finished setting up our sub site.

Tania Watson is on the pastoral team of South Perth Church of Christ. Tania’s passion is to be an advocate for children and for those who work with them in our churches. Her desire is to see children’s ministry incorporated and integrated deeply into the life of faith communities so that children’s faith in Jesus Christ is affirmed and nurtured at every stage of their development.

Julie Newcombe is the Children’s Pastor at Warnbro Community Church. Julie loves working with children of all ages, whether it is in Toddler Jam, Sunday Kids Church, Junior Youth Groups, Kids Camps or local primary schools. A high priority for Julie is building effective teams and reaching children through relationships.

Danny Marwick is the Children's Pastor at The Baldivis Church. On Tuesday mornings you will find Danny playing in the sandpit with the playgroup kids ( he has become an expert at sandcastles). He also enjoys meeting kids at the local primary school under the Kids Hope mentoring banner. School breakfasts are another time where Danny works with other volunteers from the church. What Danny enjoys the most in his week is worshiping with all the kids in Kids Church - jumping around,and singing praises to God and hearing about what God is doing in their lives.
